Why do I need a dental cleaning if I brush my teeth?

Even if you brush and floss your teeth every single day and do a great job, your toothbrush and floss cannot reach every area of your teeth and gums. When plaque, a mixture of food particles and bacteria, collects on teeth in those areas such as between your teeth or just below the gumline, it eventually hardens into tartar. Once this occurs, you will not be able to remove it at home.

When left on your teeth and beneath your gums for too long, tartar can irritate your gums, create a harbor for bacteria, and cause an infection. Once inflammation occurs, the gum disease cycle can progress.

Regular dental cleanings can prevent you from getting periodontal disease. Our hygienists are highly skilled, thorough, and very gentle with patients. They use precision instruments designed to remove tartar from those areas and to remove surface stains from your teeth. A final polish removes any small particles from your teeth and buffs them to a shine.

For most patients, a dental cleaning twice a year will be enough to stay healthy. For patients who have had gum disease in the past or who build tartar quickly, we recommend more frequent dental cleanings to prevent gum disease.
