What is oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea occurs when the tissues at the back of the throat block the free flow of air during sleep. It is usually accompanied by loud snoring and choking during sleep. Your partner may even report that you stop breathing or gasp. There are a number of health-related issues that accompany sleep apnea, which you can learn about on our sleep apnea page.
While sleep apnea is most often treated using CPAP therapy, many patients don’t like the feeling of wearing a mask at night and want an alternative that is more convenient and easier to get used to. CPAP therapy can also make it difficult to travel. Oral appliance therapy provides that alternative and we offer it as a treatment for mild to moderate sleep apnea in our Westwood, NJ dental office.
Oral appliance therapy uses a custom designed device that you wear during sleep. The appliance will adjust the jaw to open the airway and allow for easier breathing.
Many people are more compliant when using this method because it allows for greater mobility during sleep and is less restrictive. Compliance with sleep apnea treatment is important, and we look forward to helping you enjoy a restful night’s sleep.
