How does sedation dentistry work?
In our Westwood dental office, we offer sedation dentistry for patients who have dental anxiety, have difficulty sitting during longer appointments, or who have trouble getting completely numb.
To determine if sedation dentistry is safe for you, we will start with a full medical history to rule out any complications, such as drug interactions. Your safety is the number one priority.
Once our dentists determine that sedation is appropriate, they will recommend a prescription medication, which you will take about an hour before your procedure begins, to help you relax during your treatment. Since sedation dentistry requires long-lasting oral medication, you will need a driver to bring you to your appointment and take you home afterward.
During your appointment, you will remain conscious, but comfortable. While you will still be able to interact with your dentist, you will not feel stressed or anxious. Many of our patients report that their procedure seemed to fly by and they remember very little about it.
It’s best to spend the rest of the day relaxing. Avoid driving for your safety (and that of others), and don’t make any important decisions.
